THE COMMISSION FO LAW ENFORCEMENT ACCREDITATION
This Letter to the Commission is to advise of the recent On-Site Assessment of the Police
Department by representatives of the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation
(CFA). As you will recall, the Police Department began it's quest for CFA Accreditation in February
of this year.
As the Police Department holds International Accreditation by the Commission for the Accreditation
for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the State of Florida has provisions to grant comparative
compliance to agencies that hold CALEA Accreditation. This means the Police Department had to
prove compliance with all of the CALEA standards as well as with 29 additional CFA standards not
covered by CALEA.
The CFA Assessors were Team Leader Captain Albert Arenal of the Punta Gorda Police
Department and Commander Scott Bartal of the Port St. Lucie Police Department. The Assessment
Team was on site Tuesday August 14 and Wednesday August 15, 2001.
The On-Site Assessment included a complete tour of all of the Police Department's facilities,
interviews with over 40 employees from every level of the Department and review of the CFA
accreditation files.
We are proud to announce the Police Department's On-Site Assessment went extremely well and
that the Team Leader informed us that he would be recommending to the full CFA Commission that
the Police Department be granted CFA Accreditation at the Commission's next meeting to be held
on October 10, 2001, in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
To show you how significant an accomplishment this is, there are only 80 law enfomement
agencies in the State who are accredited by CFA. Of that 80, only 32 or 40% have both CALEA
and CFA Accredited status. This clearly puts our Police Department among the elite not only in
Florida but also in the entire country.
