SU[iJECL BEACHWALK NORTH EXTENSIO W-HOTEL) PROJECT OPENING
The purpose of [his LTC is to provide information regarding the opening of the Beachwalk
North Extension (W-Hotel) Project On Friday, June 26, 2009 the Beachwalk North
Extension opened for public use. This project extended the existing beachwalk at 21''' Street
north to 23rd street connecting with the existing boardwalk with an ADA accessible ramp.
The Project runs immediately cast of the W-Hotel (2201 Collins Avenue), Collins Park, and
west of the dune. The Project is part of the larger Atlantic Greenway Network (AGN), which
is a system of bicycle/pedestrian/greenway projerts, being designed to promote alternative
transportation and community enhancement in the South, Middle and North Beach
neighborhoods of Miami Beach. The Beachwalk North Extension is part of the
northboundlsouthbound multipurpose public access corridor that provides alternative
transportation, via bicycling or walking, and will serve as a connection to business and
residential areas, schools, parks, and beaches.
The W-Hotel South Beach Project located al 2201 Collins Avenue voluntarily offered to
replace the wooden boardwalk in the area immediately adjacent to its eastern property
boundary with a beachwalk. The City found it beneficial to create a seamless and contiguous
connection from the proposed project and the existing northern terminus of the beachwalk.
On April 22, 2009 the Cily and 2201 Collins Fee, LLC entered into an agreement. It was
negotiated that 2201 Collins Fee, LLC would design, develop, construct, and partially fund
the beachwalk east of the W-Hotel and Collins Park and on 22"" Streetend.
The total linear footage of this project is approximately eight hundred and eighty-four (884)
feet, which includes 304 feet of pathway adjacent to the W-Hotel private property, the 120
feet of 22nd Streetend, and 460 feet of pathway adjacent to City-owned property Collins
Park. The total project cost for the Beachwalk North Extension was $1,107,225. The
developers construction cost $582,225, plus another $275,000 in Right-of-Way fees which
the City applied to the project The City contributed $250,000 toward the contract price. The
City contributed Icss than 50% of the total cost of the project while Ei5%~ of the total
infrastructure built lies directly adjacent to City-owned Collins Park and on the public
streetend. The City has received a net benefit through this agreement by obtaining the
portion of the beachwalk adjacent to public property and the streetend al a discounted price.
Construction of the Beachwalk North Extension began December 2008 and lasted
approximately seven (7) months. The project includes coastal dune enhancement such as
the removal of exotic species, planliny of relive dune vegetation, and the installation of
protective rope and post around the dunes. The lighting throughout the Beachwalk North
Extension was specially designed (or Miarni Beach to orient light away from the ocean and
thereby minimize the impact on nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings that can become
disoriented by artificial liyhling.
