Kasdin and Members of the City Commission Jorge M, Gonzalez \, . ~ City Manager J""- 0 SUBJECT: WEEKLY UPDATE FROM: The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week of September 3, 2001, Labor Day Weekend - The Administration worked to assure that planning and resources were appropriately allocated during the Labor Day Weekend. Plans included implementing a modified traffic plan, deployment of the City's Goodwill Ambassadors, and augmented police and other public safety services, All events held over the course of the weekend, including the annual Home Show and the "Fiesta Splash," were a success and with no major incidents reported, Beach Concessions - Representatives from the Administration continued negotiations with representatives from Boucher Brothers in an attempt to finalize an agreement to be presented to the City Commission at the September 20, 2001 Commission meeting. Collins Avenue - Work on the City's watermain project was completed this week. Central Florida Equipment Rental (CFER) is in the process of beginning to install the service laterals to the hotels and businesses along the corridor. Our contract with CFER directs that the connection of the service laterals be coordinated with each hotel or business, Representatives from the Administration continue to meet weekly with representatives from the hotels and businesses on Collins Avenue to update them on the status of the construction, Citywide Signage - Members of the Administration have been meeting with consultant Craig Berger of the Foundation for Architecture in an effort to create a signage masterplan for the City, The signage systems will integrate destination wayfinding systems, special events signage systems and neighborhood systems so that ultimately the City has a consistent wayfinding and identity system that . promotes the destinations in Miami Beach and improves traffic flow and identifies parking, Mr, Berger has been working successfully on the highly regarded Philadelphia signage system and throughout the U,S, to address Department of Transportation concerns and create attractive wayfinding alternatives. Police Department Executive Development Process - The Administration is continuing to work with Cross Consulting to assess the City's Police Department Command Staff through an executive development process in order to identify the next Chief of Police and appropriate subsequent appointments to the Command Staff due to potential promotions and retirements. The Command Staff will be participating in various leadership development sessions on September 11 and 12. La Cumbre Conference - 1800 of the most important travel and tour buyers from Latin America attended an opening party at Penrod's on September 5 co- sponsored by the City of Miami Beach, United Airlines, and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. The conference continued through Friday, September 7. Planning Board Meeting - Was held on September 6 to consider requests of the applicant for amending the future land use map and zoning map of the Alaska parcel from M.R. Marine to CPS-3 (Commercial Intensive Mix Use), Public testimony was given by the applicant to the Board and after careful consideration of this evidence and testimony, the Board made a motion to make a recommendation against the change in designation. Fire Station 4 Community Workshop - Was held on September 6 regarding the proposed historic designation of Fire Station # 4, The purpose of this outreach meeting was to let the public know about the historic significance of the Fire Station # 4 structure and for them to understand the process involved in anticipation of the public hearing on September 12 and the Historic Preservation and Planning Board meetings. A handful of residents were on hand to discuss this issue and hear about the next steps involved. A meeting with the residents of the condo building directly south of the proposed site is scheduled for September 11, 2001, at 8:00PM.
