LTC # 189-2009 LETTER TO COMMISSION To: Mayor Matti H. Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, Ciry Manager DATE: July 14, 2009 SueJECT: NE 79"' Street Causeway (State Road 934) Bridge Rehabilitation Project The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide you with an update on the NE 79"' Street Causeway (State Road 934) Bridge Rehabilitation Project. On Thursday July 23. 2009 the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District 6, will begin this project with the purpose of enhancing the causeway by performing miscellaneous bridge repairs. This project is expected to last approximately seven months and cost an estimated $1.7 million. Please note that bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances could impact this projected schedule. In order to complete this work safely, it will be necessary to close travel lanes along the NE 79"' Street Causeway at various times and locations. Starting July 23, with duration of approximately one month, intermittent lane closures will begin on the outside lanes. Starting on August 23 approximately, one single outside Lane will be closed (either eastbound or westbound) from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for about four months for tendon installation. Pedestrian access is anticipated to be maintained on one side of the road at all times. Maritime traffic should not be impacted by this work. The contractor will coordinate with the U.S. Coast Guard as necessary to advise mariners of any project related impacts. FDOT notified us that the project was going to start July 12, 2009; City staff immediately contacted FDOT's District Secretary and suggested postponement of the original starting date for this project to lessen the impact on mobility created by detouring the traffic from the closure of the I-95 southbound ramp to eastbound Julia Tuttle Causeway (S.R. 112). In response to our request, FDOT made adjustments to their project schedule and their process to accomplish this work benefitting vehicular drivers on both sides of the Causeway. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
