2009-27121 ResoRESOLUTION NO. 2009-27121 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE APPROPRIATION AND EXPENDITURE OF $14,200 FOR THE CITY'S JOINT TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GLOBAL SPECTRUM AND CENTERPLATE; AND FURTHER AWARDING SAID SCHOLARSHIPS TO AYSHA MOWSHUMI IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,250; ELIZABETH GALVIS IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,900; MAYDEL ALMAGUER IN THE AMOUNT OF $2,300; CHRISTINE ACHILLA IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,900; MELISSA TATTA IN THE AMOUNT OF $2,050; NOELIA GONZALEZ IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,100; GUIHERME CUNHA IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,150; KATIE GONCALVES IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,200; AND COLBY GONCALVES IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,350. WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach Tourism and Hospitality Scholarship Program began in 2003 in partnership with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), SMG and Centerplate; and WHEREAS, Global Spectrum and Centerplate currently partner with the City on this program; and WHEREAS, Global Spectrum contributes $12,500 annually and Centerplate contributes $20,000 annually; and WHEREAS, the scholarship program is geared toward Miami Beach residents or graduates of Miami Beach Senior High School who are enrolled or are planning to enroll in post-secondary education and have expressed interest in the food and hospitality industry (as demonstrated by coursework and extracurricular activities); and WHEREAS, the City Administration recommends appropriation of $14,200 in support of the Tourism and Hospitality Scholarship Program and further recommends approval of the aforementioned scholarships. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, authorize the appropriation and expenditure of $14,200 for the City's joint Tourism and Hospitality Scholarship Program in partnership with Global Spectrum and Centerplate; and further awarding said scholarships to Aysha Mowshumi in the amount of $1,250; Elizabeth Galvis in the amount of $1,900; Maydel Almaguer in the amount of $2,300; Christine Achilla in the amount of $1,900; Melissa Tatta in the amount of $2,050; Noelia Gonzalez in the amount of $1,100; Guiherme Cunha in the amount of $1,150; Katie Goncalves in the amount of $1,200; and Colby Goncalves in the amount of $1,350. During the GMCVB's last contract renewal in 2004, the requirement was removed from their contract. As you know, in September of 2008, the City replaced SMG with Global Spectrum. Therefore, Global Spectrum and Centerplate currently partner with the City on this program. Global Spectrum contributes $12,500 annually and Centerplate contributes $20,000 annually. There is also a carry forward balance of $28,600 from 2008. Therefore, the City currently has $61,100 available for this scholarship program. After the 2009 awards are made, there will be $46,900 (plus future contributions) available. The scholarship program is geared toward Miami Beach residents or graduates of Miami Beach Senior High School who enroll in post-secondary education and have expressed interest in the food and hospitality industry (as demonstrated by coursework and extracurricular activities). Since the inception of the program, $172,850, which includes the current scholarship recommendation of $14,200, has been awarded to 30 different Miami Beach students.
