LTC 268-2009 South Beach Local Community MeetingsOFFICE OF tHE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC # X68-2009 LETTER TO COMMISSION io: Mayor Matti H. Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager ~-., r- . ;~ ~ /~ 1 DATE October ti, 2009 / '~ / SUBJECT: South Beach Local Community Meeti~g~ `- The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you of two (2) upcoming public meetings for the South Beach Local (SBL). The first meeting will be held for the general public on Monday, October 26, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at the Miami Beach City Hall Commission Chambers. The second meeting will be held for the Rebecca Towers residents, although it will still be open to the general public. This meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 2:00 p.m. at the Rebecca Tower North Multi-purpose Room at 200 Alton Road. Representatives from Miami Dade Transit (MDT) will be present. The public meetings will be held to solicit input and suggestions from the public to determine the ways in which the SBL can be improved in order to provide a high quality of transit service. This will help to promote transit as a mode of transportation in the City and to increase SBL ridership, which may help to reduce traffic congestion, alleviate parking shortage, and improve air quality. MDT and the City recently extended the SBL to Collins Park and Belle Isle and modified existing bus stops. The new Collins Park stop is on 21"Street and Park Avenue and provides residents with access to the Bass Museum, Miami City Ballet, Miami Beach Library and the Beachwalk at 21'` Street. The Belle Isle stop is on the Venetian Causeway at Island Avenue East. The new stops have increased travel times as well as headways (or frequency of bus service) for the SBL. During off peak hours, the headways were changed from every 15 minutes to every 20 minuses, and during peak hours, the headways were changed from every 10 minutes to every 12 minutes. The City's Transportation Division has been coordinating with MDT to monitor ridership at these new stops. Residents will have an opportunity to discuss these service changes with both City and MDT staff. City staff will be conducting an onboard customer survey for the SBL in mid October. The customer survey will provide a means to gauge the SBL's performance from the passenger's point of view. The survey will be administered during three (3) days, two week days during the morning and afternoon peak periods between the hours of 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and one weekend day during the morning and afternoon peak periods between the hours of 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The information obtained will be tabulated and compiled utilizing charts and graphs and the results will be presented at the two upcoming SBL community meetings. The information obtained from these public meetings will also help prepare the City for future negotiations with MDT for the SBL Interlocal Agreement (ILA), which expires on October 11, 2010.
