2009-27260 ResoRESOLUTION NO. 2009-27260 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RATIFYING THE ACCEPTANCE OF A DONATION OF $5,000 FROM STAPLES, INC., FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUPPORTING THE CITY OF M1AM1 BEACH'S YOUTH EMPOWERMENT NETWORK (YEN) TO ENHANCE ITS CURRENT PROGRAM; AND FURTHER APPROPRIATING SAID FUNDS FOR YEN. WHEREAS, Staples, Inc. opened a store in the City, at 1139 - 5th Street, on October 26, 2009; and WHEREAS, Staples, Inc. has a corporate tradition of making a charitable contribution to a worthy non-profit organization in each community in which it opens a store; and WHEREAS, the Youth Empowerment Network is a City program providing after- school tutoring and enrichment programming to youth of Biscayne Elementary and Fienberg/Fisher K-8 Center; and WHEREAS, the Youth Empowerment Network has a 97 (out of 100) program rating from The Children's Trust; and WHEREAS, Staples, Inc. made a donation to the City, in the amount of $5,000, to be utilized toward support of the Youth Empowerment Network; and WHEREAS, the donation was accepted by Mayor Bower on October 26, 2009 at the Miami Beach Staples store opening; ratification of the acceptance is hereby requested. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED THAT THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City Commission hereby ratify the acceptance of a donation of $5,000 from Staples, Inc., for the purpose of supporting the City of Miami Beach's Youth Empowerment Network (YEN) to enhance its current program; and further appropriating said funds for YEN. Item Summa /Recommendation: For every store opening, Staples, Inc. chooses a nonprofit community partner to receive a company donation. For its recent South Beach store opening, Staples, Inc. chose the City of Miami Beach's Youth Empowerment Network, a City program serving youth at Biscayne Elementary and Fienberg/Fisher K-8 Center, to receive a $5,000 donation. The donated funds will be used to acquire computers and software for use by program youth. The Youth Empowerment Network is funded through The Children's Trust to provide after school tutoring, daily snacks, enrichment activities, field trips and care coordination to 52 third, fourth, and fifth grade students at Fienberg/ Fisher K-8 Center and Biscayne Elementary School who have a 2.5 Grade Point Average and/or five or more school absences. The two primary goals of this program are to increase the Grade Point Averages and/or decrease the absences of the participating students, as compared to the previous school year. The City received notification of the proposed donation shortly before the store opening. On October 26, 2009, Mayor Bower attended the event and accepted the check on behalf of the City. It is recommended that the Commission ratify the acceptance of the donation.
