LTC 021-2010 Events planned to celebrate MiMo architecture in Miami Beachm MIAMIBEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER 2010 JA1~ 22 P~ 3:44 NO. LTC#021-2010 LETTER TO CQ~+1~1~$~I~O~FFIC~ TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager .~ yN~ DATE: January 21, 2010 SUBJECT: Events planned to celebrate MiMo architecture in Miami Beach The Planning Department is coordinating a series of promotional activities and events to raise public awareness of the importance of Miami Modern "MiMo" architecture in Miami Beach. This effort originated with the recent announcement that the "North Shore District" has been accepted by the National Park Service on behalf of the Secretary of the Interior, for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This same honor was bestowed on the "Normandy Isles District" last year. The city also has two locally designated historic districts north of 44th Street -the "Morris Lapidus /Mid-20th Century Modern Historic District" and the "North Shore Resort Historic District".Altogether, these four districts represent the most extensive and cohesive collection of mid-century modern architecture in South Florida and possibly anywhere in the nation. There is great potential to broaden the base of cultural tourism in the city by educating the general public about this unique and recently appreciated style of American architecture; as well as to educate potential developers and current property owners of the availability of Federal Historic Preservation Tax Credits for qualifying rehabilitation work in the National Register districts. Such federal tax credits were a significant factor in the early years of the renovation and revitalization of the Art Deco district. Consequently, a Federal Tax Credit Workshop is among the upcoming events. Following is the schedule of events that have been planned. The Mayor and Commissioners are cordially invited to participate.
