2007-26525 ResoRESOLUTION NO. 2007-26525 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING MIAMI-DADE COUNTY MAYOR CARLOS ALVAREZ AND THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO ENHANCE THE MIAMI- DADE COUNTY PARKS DEPARTMENT BUDGET IN ORDER TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FUNDING TO ENSURE THAT BEACH CLEANLINESS AND RENOURISHMENT IS ADEQUATELY PROVIDED TO THE BEACHES UNDER MIAMI-DADE COUNTY'S RESPONSIBILITY WHICH ARE LOCATED WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH. WHEREAS, as reflected in increased Convention Development Tax receipts, there is an increasing number of visitors to the beaches and hotels within the City of Miami Beach which contributes to additional litter on the beaches; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach continually assesses cleanliness throughout the City using statistically valid samples and provides Citywide cleanliness ratings; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach periodically surveys community satisfaction with the overall quality of our beaches, including cleanliness, water quality, etc.; and WHEREAS, the 2005 Community Satisfaction Survey identified the overall quality of beaches as a key factor in our residents' perception of the City of Miami Beach as a place to live and the overall quality of life in the City; and WHEREAS, the beach areas under Miami-Dade County's responsibility consistently rate worse than the areas of the beach that are the City's responsibility; specifically, the litter and organic matter components of the County maintained areas are among the worst rated within the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, the Miami-Dade County Parks Department budget needs to be enhanced with additional funding to ensure that beach cleanliness and renourishment is adequately provided within the City of Miami Beach and the County's focus and attention should be directed toward this issue which is of great importance with regard to the health, safety, and welfare of the City of Miami Beach and its residents and tourists. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez and the Board of County Commissioners for Miami-Dade County are hereby urged to enhance the Miami-Dade County Parks Department budget with additional funding in order to ensure that adequate funding is provided to address beach cleanliness and renourishment in County maintained areas within the City of Miami Beach. GONZALEZ CITY MANAGER FROM: SIMON CRUZ ~~ COMMISSIO R DATE: APRIL 10, 2007 RE: EMERGENCY AGENDA ITEM Please place on the April 11, 2007 City Commission Agenda for discussion, the current beach renourishment needs and the expected time line for renourishing the different sections of the beaches. Many of our residents and businesses are loosing their beachfront and the situation is growing critical and a fast response is extremely important.
