2010-27367 ResoRESOLUTION No. 2010-27367 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH TO ACCEPT MONETARY DONATIONS IN ORDER TO FUND THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH "TAKE YOUR CHILD TO WORK DAY" (THE "EVENT"), AND FURTHER APPROVING THE APPROPRIATION OF THE DONATED FUNDS FOR THE EVENT. WHEREAS, the National "Take Your Child to Work Day" is scheduled for Thursday, April 22, 2010; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach has traditionally encouraged employees to bring their children to work, and to participate in activities that are overseen by various City of Miami Beach departments; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach deems this Event an important and essential component in providing children exposure to possible career options in the foreseeable future, and the value and significance of the children's education; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach Police and Fire Departments have been chosen to oversee this event; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach's various labor unions have expressed an interest in donating funds for the Event, and it is anticipated that approximately $2,500.00 will be donated to fund the Events activities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYORAND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission for the City of Miami Beach hereby authorizes the City of Miami Beach to accept monetary donations in order to fund the City of Miami Beach "Take Your Child To Work Day" (the "Event"), and further approving the appropriation of the donated funds for the Event. ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION Adopt the Resolution. ANALYSIS The National Take Your Child to Work Day, began in 1993 by the Foundation for Women as the "Take Our Daughters to Work Day",and has since expanded to include sons and held on the fourth Thursday in April. One of the goals of this event is to help teach kids about their parent's work-day. It is also important to show children the value of their education and expose them to possible career options in the future. This year's event will be held on Thursday, April 22nd at various City facilities. The City of Miami Beach has traditionally encouraged employees to bring their children to participate in activities over~en by various departments. For the second consecutive year, the Administration has asked the Police and Fire Departments to take the lead in organizing the event. Several employee unions have expressed an interest in donating funds to support this event. Last year, donations totaled approximately $2,500. These funds will be used for food, drinks, materials for crafts and "Take Your Child to Work Day" T- Shirts. Additionally, private citizens unsolicited have expressed an interest in providing donations toward funding this event. Further, no City funds will be used for this event. CONCLUSION The Administration recommends that the Mayor and City Commission adopt the resolution accepting donations for Take Your Child to Work Day and further approve the appropriation of donations for the event.
