SUBJECT: Washington Dog Park Groundbreaking Ceremony
This Letter to Commission is intended to invite you to attend the Washington Dog Park
groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 6:00 P.M. Please see the
attached invitation.
The dog park at Washington Park will be our newest and most dog friendly site yet. In June
of 2009, the City Commission authorized $60,836 for the construction of this facility. During
the June Commission discussion, it was requested that staff work with interested residents
to design the park and make it "something special."
Staff met with representatives from the community, the SoFik9's organization (comprised
mainly of residents south of Fifth Street) and the RDO (Responsible Dog Owners) on a
number of occasions to not only design the park, but to develop a fundraising program with
the goal of raising additional funds to add components that the stakeholders identified they
wanted for the park, but were not budgeted. These additional amenities include, but are not
limited to, a water spray fountain for the dogs, extra benches, trash receptacles and dog bag
dispensers and an eco-friendly rain water collection system that would augment the water for
the irrigation in the park. The fundraising activities included individual donations from a
member of the SoFi K9's group to assist in the purchase of the water spray feature, as well
as donations for the extra benches and the sale of engraved memorial bricks for other park
features. We are pleased to advise you that more than $40,000 was met, the park is
designed and we are eager to proceed.

will soon have Washington Park going to the dogs!
