LTC 180-2010 Summer Pool Hoursm MIAMI~~,4~F~ OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER ZQ~Q vIU L $ ~~ ~' ~~ NO. LTC # 18o-2oio LETTE~.'p~C~ COlulM,l I~,~S~ON TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, DATE: June 17 2010 City Manager ~.N~ SUBJECT: Summer Pool Hours -Lap Swimming This Letter to Commission is provided to you in the event you have received any emails about the summer pool hours and the impact on our adult lap swimming program. Please know that we have addressed this issue at the beginning of our Summer Camp program previously. Monday, June 14th was the first day of our 2010 Summer Camp. As such we initiated our summer pool hours, which have been posted at the pools and in the Recreation Review for some time now. The public pool hours can also be found at www.miamibechparks.com. We develop a schedule that is designed to accommodate both 'the adult lap swimmers, our summer campers and of course the general public. This schedule has proved to be very successful. in prior years. The lap swimmer hours are as follows: • Flamingo and Normandy: Designated lap swimming times are 6:45 - 8:45 am and 7 - 9 pm. .Additionally, when the Flamingo and Normandy pools are open during general public sessions there are always lap lanes available for swimmers. As such, lap swimmers have four hours a day of only lap swimming, as well as time to swim during general public session times. As in previous years, the Flamingo and Normandy Pools are closed to the general public so we can bring our park campers to the pools on Monday -Friday between 9:00 am and 12:30 pm. We open for general public sessions at 1:00 P.M. Scott Rakow: Lap swimming is available from Gam -Sam Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and on Sundays from 2:00 - 5:30 pm. During the week, we allow the adults one hour after swimming to shower and dress. Summer day camp hours at the Scott Rakow Youth Center are from 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. During the summer our day camp swimming at the Rakow Center starts at 9:30 am. Children enter the locker rooms to change into their bathing suits as early as 9:00 am. For the safety of our 270 day campers at the Rakow Youth Center, we do not encourage having adults in the locker rooms and showers at the same time of the children. We are confident that this is the preference of our parents, as well. Because Monday was the first day of camp, many campers did not remember to bring their suits, resulting in the pool not being full of children; this is not the typically case. The Rakow pool will also be utilized by 20 children from the swim team program, 170 participants from the Teen Club at 21St Street and 20 participants from the City's Dance Camp program. Please also know that the SRYC has classes in the evening for Youth Water Polo and Adult Fitness. Our policy of minimizing the overlap of children summer program pool users with adult pool users has resulted in this type of schedule during the summer for at least 10 years. Although this does reduce the hours of potential use by adults, we strongly believe this is a policy that balances safety with access, and certainly it is only an adjustment made during the summer months. As previously noted, summer adult swim time has been posted for some time now, advising the public of the change of time. As always, please feel free to contact my office should you have any questions. H:\Parks\Itc re lap swimming and summer pool hours FINAL.doc
