A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission of the City of South
miami, Florida, urging the Florida Legislature and Federal '
Government to decriminalize and authorize the medicinal use of

Whereas, Alaska, California, a � g
Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island; Vermont, Washington and the
District of Columbia have enacted laws protecting medical marijuana patients from state'
prosecution, and
Whereas, the State of Florida prohibits the possession, manufacture or use of
marijuana for medicinal purposes, and
Whereas, marijuana is still considered illegal contraband under federal law,, and.
Whereas, marijuana has been reported to be effective in: a) reducing intraocular
pressure in glaucoma; b) reducing nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy; c)

stimulating the appetite for patients living with AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency
syndrome) and suffering from the wasting syndrome; d) controlling spasticity associated
•
with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis; e) decreasing the suffering from chronic
pain; and f) controlling seizures associated with seizure disorders.
Whereas, the benefits of medicinal use of marijuana greatly outweigh any law
enforcement or public safety concerns associated with such medicinal use
Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Mayor and City Commission of the City,, of
South Miami, Florida:
Section 1. The City Commission of the City of South Miami supports the
decriminalization of marijuana for medicinal uses for individuals who suffer from

debilitating conditions for which marijuana has proven to be either an effective treatment
or an effective way to minimize the patient's pain and suffering.
Section 2. The City Commission of the City of South Miami respectfully
requests that the President, the United States Congress and Florida Legislature
expeditiously decriminalize the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Section 3. The City Clerk shall transmit copies of this Resolution to the

President of the United States, to Governor Crist, and to the City's legislative delegation.:
Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption
