SUBJECT: America Recycles Day
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to announce the celebration of America Recycles
Day. On Sunday, November 21 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., on Lincoln Road at the Euclid
Circle, representatives from the recycling industry, non - profit environmental organizations,
Miami -Dade County and City staff will have informational booths, workshops and presentations,
and fun educational activities for children. In addition, a free household hazardous waste drop -
off will be located at 41 Street and Chase Avenue.
Miami Beach's waste haulers Choice Environmental Services, General Hauling Services Inc.,
WSI and Waste Management Inc., will provide information on the residential and commercial
recycling options available within the City. The companies EcoBat, SmartAtBulbs and
eTronic /eWaste will be collecting used batteries, light bulbs and electronics such as computers,
keyboards, monitors, printers, and cell phones during the event. The Recyclable Planet Project
will have a "green machine" present to collect clean PET plastic bottles and aluminum cans for
recycling. The non - profit organization ECOMB will provide educational material on the benefits
of recycling to the health of the community and the local environment. Also, the non - profit
organization, Streetwaves will be present to provide information about its mission to mentor and
empower high -risk urban youth through environmental stewardship and engagement in outdoor
activities such as swimming and surfing.
The Miami Beach Public Works' Environmental Division staff will provide educational materials -
about the City's recycling efforts, including the upcoming addition to the City's recycling
program that will provide temporary Community Drop -off locations at 210 2 Street in South
Beach and 75 Street and Dickens Avenue in North Beach. In addition, the Sanitation Division
will provide single- stream recycling at the event site where residents can drop -off commingled
recyclables (office paper, magazines, cardboard, newspaper, plastic, metal, glass).
Because water conservation goes hand in hand with recycling, reusing and reducing, Miami -
Dade County Water and Sewer Department (WASD) will provide information about the
County's Water Conservation Program. WASD and the Miami -Dade County Office of
Sustainability is offering County residents the opportunity to get two (2) High- Efficiency
Showerheads and up to three (3) energy- saving Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs for free.
County residents may take their current showerheads and three (3) most heavily used regular
light bulbs to the event and trade them for more efficient ones while supplies last.
The event also includes fun activities for children, and presentations on greening your home
and ideas for starting a fun family project. The ReThink + ReUse Center and Upcycled Objects
will provide children with hands -on activities where they will have the opportunity to create art
and jewelry from recycled materials. The non - profit organization Fertile Earth will be giving a
composting presentation at 12:30PM showing how to create and maintain a compo system
and how this benefits clean water, soil and air. Also, the OF Extension and Florida Yards &
Neighborhoods will be giving rain barrel presentations throughout the day and will provide
information about other simple water conservation techniques.

The City will be providing free household hazardous waste drop -off to Miami Beach residents
• from 9am to 4pm at the parking lot located on 41 Street and Chase Avenue. Acceptable
household hazardous waste to bring include: latex paint, aerosol cans, herbicides/
pesticides/ insecticides/ fungicides, automotive oil, transmission fluid /antifreeze,
gasoline, automotive /marine batteries, household batteries, kerosene, acids, oil based
paints, any household chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, primer/ turpentines/ varnishes,
medical waste, propane tanks, mercury items/ mercury contaminated debris, fire
extinguishers, and any other household chemicals. All materials taken to the drop - off
• location must be properly identified/ labeled and in a sealed container. This is a safe
alternative for residents to properly dispose of household chemicals and help prevent these
products from contaminating our soils and groundwater.
America Recycles Day is advertised on the City's website and was distributed through a press
release. •

between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Lincoln Road at the Euclid Circle. Representatives
from the recycling industry, non - profit environmental organizations, Miami -Dade County
and the City of Miami Beach will have informational booths, free giveaways, collections,
workshops and presentations, and fun, educational activities for children.

RECYCLING /COLLECTIONS:
