LTC 049-2011 Removal of Five Australian Pines on Pinetree Drive MIAMIBEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC # 049 -2011 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti H. Bower and Members of the City Commission {-, rn FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager = DATE: February 24, 2011 m SUBJECT: Removal of Five Australian Pines on Pinetree Drive This Letter to Commission is provided to advise you that, as authorized by the City Commission on January 19, 2011, five Australian Pines on Pinetree Drive will be removed in order to evaluate the extent of decay within their lower trunks and large roots. All of these trees showed evidence of decay during an external examination by Board Certified MasterArborist, Chuck Lippi. The five trees are scheduled for removal during the week of February 28 to March 4, 2011 by a Miami -Dade County contracted tree crew. The removals and "dissection" of the Australian Pines will be supervised by City of Miami Beach Urban Forester, Chris Latt. Two of the trees to be removed are located on the Pinetree Drive median north of 44 Street, one is located on the median just south of 42 Street, and two are located on the median south of 34 Street. The south -bound lane of Pinetree Drive will be closed to traffic for one block when the tree removals are in progress at each of these three locations. Only one block will be closed at a time. All of Pinetree Drive, except for the block where tree work is in progress, will remain open. Closures are not expected to affect the north -bound lanes. A Miami -Dade County engineer has identified detour routes for each location, as shown on the attached flyer. Additionally, and as directed, the Administration has begun the research to determine what steps would be necessary to gain any available approvals to replace the Australian Pines with other Australian Pines, should we be able to do so. We have begun outreach to advise the neighboring community of this project and ensure that they understand that these removals are necessary to assess the extent of decay, and are limited to these trees at this time. As always, please advise if you have questions or require additional information.
