2001-24631 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 2001-24631 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ESTABLISHING THE ONE-MONTH PERIOD BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 15, 2001 AND ENDING OCTOBER 15, 2001 AS "HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH. WHEREAS, for more than thirty years, our United States Presidents have designated September 15 through October 15 as the official month during which we can acknowledge, as a nation, the extraordinary contributions of Hispanic Americans; and WHEREAS, the City's Hispanic population continues to contribute significantly to the community, demonstrated by the City's sponsorship of several cultural arts events that promote the rich Hispanic heritage, traditions, visual arts and music that will build bridges between cultures; and WHEREAS, the City's celebrations begin on Thursday, October 11, 2001 during the Arts Beach 2nd Thursday's event; and WHEREAS, an exhibit will be staged on the 4th floor of City Hall and a Puerto Rican exhibit will be held in the Arts, Culture and Entertainment conference room during the celebrations; and WHEREAS, all events are free and open to the public. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the one-month beginning September 15, 2001 and ending October 15, 2001 is hereby established as "Hispanic Heritage Month", and the Mayor and City Commission ask that the citizens of this community join in celebrating the contributions of the Hispanic community to the progress of our city and nation. ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION Adopt the Resolution. ANALYSIS "Hispanic Heritage Month" was established in 1968, and every President since has issued a formal proclamation during the month beginning September 15 and ending October 15, asking that the nation pay tribute to the great contributions of Hispanics in their communities. According to the U,S. Census Bureau, more than 26 million people in the United States are of Hispanic origin. A majority of the Miami Beach population is Hispanic and will remain as migration to South Florida from Latin America continues. Our Hispanic population continues to contribute significantly to the community, demonstrated by the City's sponsorship of several cultural arts events that promote the rich Hispanic heritage, traditions, visual arts and music that will build bridges between cultures. The City of Miami Beach Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations begin on Thursday, October 11, 2001 during the Arts Beach 2nd Thursday's event. Additionally, an exhibit will be staged on the 4th floor of City Hall and a Puerto Rican exhibit will be held in the Arts, Culture & Entertainment conference room. All events are free and open to the public.
