SUBJECT: 2011 Free Tax Preparation Services for Residents & City Employees Report
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you of the final number of
households provided with free tax preparation services this year.
As you may recall, the City„ through our Office of Community Services (OCS), partnered
with the Internal Revenue Service and VITA to provide free standard tax preparation
services for resident and employee households earning up to $49,000 per year. From
February 9th through April 14th, volunteers recruited by OCS were trained by the
Internal Revenue Service to provide free tax preparation services to 72 households.
These services were provided at City Hall and North Shore Youth Center.
The following are highlights of the benefits obtained for our residents:
• $71,074.00 in total tax refunds
• 16 households claiming the Earned Income Credit resulting in $11,086 refunded
• 16 households claiming the Child Tax Credit resulting in $648 refunded
• 4 households claiming the Education Credit resulting in $4,256 refunded
The average adjusted gross income for clients served at City Hall was $18,852.92. The
average adjusted gross income for clients served at North Shore Park was $18,910.06.

The Office of the Mayor and representatives from the Miami field office of the IRS will
provide certificates of appreciation to the volunteer tax preparers on Thursday, May 12
at 4pm in the Mayor's Conference Room. We continue to pursue opportunities to assist
our residents whenever possible.
