Subject: International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme and Middle Year
Programme Authorization
The purpose of this LTC is to inform you that North Beach Elementary School, South
Pointe Elementary, and Fienberg Fisher K -8 Center received authorization to teach the
International Baccalaureate Programme in April 2011 (see attached).
Our Education Compact has resulted in North Beach Elementary and South Pointe
Elementary obtaining authorization to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) to all
attending students, aged 4 to 12. The IB PYP focuses on the development of the whole
child as an inquirer. The most significant and distinctive feature of the IB PYP is the six
transdisciplinary themes. The themes help teachers to develop a programme of
inquiries, in -depth investigations into important ideas identified by the teachers, and
requiring a high level of involvement on the part of the students.
Fienberg Fisher K -8 Center has obtained authorization to offer the IB Middle Years
Programme (MYP) to all students in grades 6 -8. The MYP, for students aged 11 to 16,
provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and
understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become
critical and reflective thinkers. Nautilus Middle School's IB MYP authorization is in a
pending status due to a master scheduling issue and should be resolved in the next few
months.
These schools join Miami Beach Senior High School as IB authorized world schools.
Our remaining candidate schools continue to offer the IB PYP, with an anticipated site
visit in the Spring of 2012.
Additionally, the International Baccalaureate Organization site visiting team commended
our schools for the exemplary and noteworthy support of the City of Miami Beach.
Commendations were also noted for the support of the parents for the Primary Years
Programme and Middle Years Programme, the motivation and enthusiasm of the
principals and staff for the Programmes, and the international- mindedness of the
teachers together with the academically oriented and involved students.
We will continue to support our strategic outcome to provide enhanced learning
opportunities for youth throughout Miami Beach through our Education Compact.
