Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: June 10, 2011 SUBJECT: Parks & Recreation News and Upcoming Events This Letter to Commission is provided to update you on activities at our Parks and Recreation Department. Summer Registration - Summer registration is in full swing. To date, approximately 1,800 registrations have been entered for day camps and specialty camps. We will provide you with final statistics on, a subsequent LTC after the summer program is complete. Playtime Graduation - On May 26t and - May 27 the North Shore Park and Youth Center and Flamingo Park Playtime Classes of 2011 graduated. Three and four year -olds walked down the aisle.to receive their very first diploma. The children performed and sang songs they learned during the school year. Parents, families and friends were present for the graduation as they celebrated with food and music. Special Olympics State Games - On May 14 and 15 the City of Miami Beach Special Olympics athletes participated in the State Games that were held in Orlando, Florida. Jose Trevino, Brian Crapp and William Lockett brought back a gold medal in soccer skills for their division. Clarice Geller won the silver medal in tennis skills. The City congratulates all the athletes for their hard. work and great accomplishments! Fashion Show — On May 13 the Parks and Recreation Department hosted their annual Fashion Show at North Shore Park and Youth Center. The event showcased the newest trends and styles of spring and summer. Over 100 people enjoyed performances and commercials created by the City's playtime program participants between the ages of 3 — 4 years old and after school program members in kindergarten through 5th grades. Movie in the Park — On May 13 the Parks and Recreation Department hosted their last Movie in the Park before summer begins; this time, at the new - renovated Scott Rakow Youth Center. Over 70 movie goers enjoyed the film "Scooby -Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster" while enjoying free popcorn and making new friends. Look in the Recreation Review for our new series dates beginning again in Fall, 2011. Senior's Bingo Night — On May 1 ot the City of Miami Beach hosted their senior's Bingo Night at the Miami Beach Convention Center, managed by Global Spectrum. Over 350. seniors played Bingo, socialized with friends and enjoyed complimentary combo meals. Members of the Miami Beach City Commission were - special guest .Bingo callers. A big thank you to them and. the Miami Beach Teen Club members who helped serve food and refreshments. Spring Eggstravaganza -- On April 23 The City of Miami Beach Parks .and Recreation Department held its annual "Spring Eggstravaganza" at the North Shore Park and . Youth Center. Close to 1,800 participants enjoyed a beautiful day of rides, music, food, eggs and our famous Easter Bunnies. Children ages 10 and under participated in an Egg Hunt, searching for eggs stuffed with candy and surprises. The Miami Beach Soccer team sold food and concessions in order to help fund the team's upcoming travel plans and tournament in Alabama. In addition, the City's Greenspace Management team hosted a tree planting ceremony to celebrate Arbor Day, while City of Miami Beach Commissioners were greeting the attendees and passing out free snow cones.. Special thanks go out to Costco, Big Brothers and Big Sisters Or Miami Dade County Public Library System and the City of Miami Beach Hispanic Affairs Committee for partnering with the City. Miami Beach U -9 Soccer Team — On April 16t 17 The City of Miami Beach_ . under -9 Soccer team brought home another championship trophy after winning the Miami Lakes under-9. Tournament. The team, coached by Darren Smith, defeated Real Madrid /Soccer Academy of the Americas 6 -3 in the tournament final. The Miami Beach U9 team advanced to the final match with a perfect 3 -0 record in group play by defeating Weston FC with a score of 5 -0, West Pines United 6 -0 and Miramar Fire 7 -1. With this team of soccer stars, the future is very bright for our Miami Beach Soccer Team. FYSA Olympic Development Program State Team — Miami. Beach Soccer is proud to announce. that 2 players have been selected to the Florida Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development Program state soccer team! The 2 players, Bryan DeFreitas and Alejandro Diaz, will now,travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama on July 8, 2011 for the Region III ODP Training in an attempt to qualify for the United States National Soccer team.
