SUBJECT "Rock of Ages" filming in Miami Beach
This Letter to Commission to inform you that beginning the week of July 18, New Line Cinema's "Rock
of Ages" will begin filming in Miami Beach An adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, the film stars
Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta Jones, Russell Brand, Julianne Hough, Pau ' Giamatti, Brian
Cranston, Mary J Blige and several others, and is being directed by Adam Shankman ( "Hairspray ")
The film has been busy substituting many parts of South Florida for Los Angeles circa 1987, including a
recreation of the Sunset Strip on North Miami Avenue. The film is here because the locations worked
and they were able to obtain the Florida film tax credit. They also are the first recipient of the Visitor and
Convention Authority's Miami Beach film incentive and are basing their production offices here and
mainly staying in Miami Beach
The primary locations used next week are the Castle Condominium's theater and the Imperial House
Condominium, both on Collins Avenue in the 50's The work is all interior and includes stunning set
design, transforming the properties into a Sunset Strip burlesque club and the suite of the famed
Chateau Marmont, respectively. The production has aligned itself with both properties, has been in
constant communication about all uses and is not impeding resident needs in the buildings Assisted by
Miami Beach police, FDOT and Miami -Dade Transit, the production will close the northbound service
lane in front of the Castle to park essential access trucks, and between the Imperial House and the 53`
Street parking lot for direct access to their base camp This will only be on actual production days. The
base camp will be in the 53 Street parking lot for the days of these productions. Through coordinated
efforts with the Parking Department and Film Office, the production will utilize the entire lot, with the
exception of a bank of meters to be made available to the public on a first come first serve basis. The
twenty eight monthly permitted users of that lot (inclusive of twenty one employees of the Alexander
Hotel) will be provided valet parking at the Alexander at the production's expense. Message Boards
and flyers will provide alerts about the limited parking and suggest nearby lots at 46 and 63` Streets,
as well as the nearest bus stops, Tess than a block away in either direction. While this' is a request the
City does not allow frequently, it is the only reasonable option to park these essential vehicles close to
these locations. The 53 Street Fire Station will not be impacted.
The production will conclude filming in Miami Beach in August with locations on Lincoln Road. If you
are interested in set visits during the filming, please contact Graham Winick in the Film Office to make
arrangements.
