Gonzalez, City 4ir DATE: April 6, 2012 SUBJECT: Latest News and Upcoming Events This Letter to Commission is provided to update you on recent and upcoming activities at our Parks and Recreation Department. Cinema and Skate Nights-The Friday Night Skates and Movie in the Park series continues to be a hit in the North Shore Park Bandshell. Movie and skate nights continue to alternate every Friday through May, 2012. Miami-Dade Special Olympics Local Games-On Saturday, March 24th, Miami Dade College's South Campus was host to the Special Olympics Local Games. Several athletes from all over Miami-Dade County competed in the Local Games in sport skill challenges such as tennis, cycling, soccer, bocce and volleyball. Miami Beach Athletes all placed 1 st for Soccer Skills. Athlete's scores will be tallied with high scorers competing at the Special Olympics State Games. Surf Camp - From March 11th-16th, the City of Miami Beach Parks & Recreation and the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM - NSU CARD) hosted its long awaited 5th Annual Spring Break Surf Camp for children with autism spectrum disorders. This unique and exciting camp opened its doors to 12 campers, ranging from 8-12 years of age,with high functioning autism, pervasive developmental disorder, or Asperger Syndrome. The unique curriculum focused on swimming skills, basic oceanography, meteorology, open water surfing and most importantly the children's abilities. First Annual UM-NSU CARD Tennis Clinic-On Sunday, March 18th, the City partnered again with UM- NSU CARD, along with Stefan Wechslberger of Global Sports Management, Greensquare-Bolletieri Inc. and Andrea Travaglia of Lee& Marie's Cakery, to host the First Annual UM-NSU CARD Tennis Clinic for individuals with autism at the Flamingo Park Tennis Center. Participants in the clinic had the opportunity to learn how to play tennis with professional tennis athletes from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour. The clinic was open to individuals with autism and was free of charge. Leprechaun Carnival - On Friday, March 16th, over 800 children and adults of all ages joined in the Leprechaun festivities at the "Leprechaun Carnival", hosted by the City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department at Flamingo Park. The festivities included free carnival rides,games,face painting, DJ entertainment, arts & crafts booth and more.
