LTC 112-2012 Cat Network, Inc. Project Cat Snip MIAMI BEACH RFCt'IVFF) OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER 2012 APR 30 PH 12: 00 NO. LTC # ; '_ ®12 CITY CLER'K'S OFF ICE - LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: April 30, 2012 SUBJECT: Cat Network, Inc. Project Cat Snip The purpose of this LTC is to announce that the City of Miami Beach has entered into an agreement with The Cat Network, Inc. to implement Project Cat Snip:Miami Beach. The project has been funded through a grant from PetSmart Charities, Inc. to the City of Miami Beach. Over the course of the next two years, 2000 cats will be sterilized in Miami Beach as a way of addressing concerns that there is an overpopulation of cats. The Cat Network, Inc. veterinarians and volunteers will perform the services. The sterilization program is free for any Miami Beach resident bringing in a community cat. Community cats are all un-owned stray cats that reside in Miami Beach. All cats that are sterilized and ear-tipped (ear-tipping is the removal of the top quarter inch of tip of the left ear while under anesthesia and is the international symbol of a sterilized stray cat), will also be de wormed; vaccinated against rabies; and receive a topical flea treatment. All stray cats must be from Miami Beach and the caretaker must prove Miami Beach residency. Additionally, The Cat Network will be trapping, treating and releasing stray cats back into their original location. This helps to control the population of stray cats and reduce the population over time through attrition. This is a model being used by communities throughout the Country. The Meow Mobile will be in Miami Beach twice a month over the next two years. On May 5, 2012 the Meow Mobile will come to Miami Beach City Hall, 1700 Convention Center Drive. The next spay day will be on May 18, 2012. It will be in North Shore Open Space Park. A schedule of future spay days is being developed to address areas with reported high populations of stray cats. For further information on future Miami Beach spay days, visit www.meowmobile.com and click on schedule. Appointments can be scheduled directly through the Cat Network.
