Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: May 3, 2012 SUBJECT: Miami -Dade County School Board cognizes Parent Child Home Program The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you of Dr. Michael Karp's recognition of the City's Parent Child Home Program at the May 16 School Board meeting. Dr. Karp, the City's representative to the Miami -Dade County School Board, will be recognizing the City's Parent -Child Home Program for its efforts to improve early literacy and increase language among toddlers and pre - school children. The program also enhances social and emotional development while strengthening the parent -child relationship. Since October 2011, the City has partnered with Barry University, a member of the Miami Beach Service Partnership, to deliver services to up to 50 children and their parents. Funded via a $150,000 grant from The Children's Trust, the program provides free books and toys as well as twice - weekly home visits for children aged 16 months to 53 months. Home visits are conducted by trained Home Visitors who model reading, play and other activities to children and parents during their two -year enrollment. Eligible parents with children aged 16 months to 30 months must come from low income households and either have been born in another country and /or never obtained a college degree. The Parent -Child Home Program is one of three programs funded by The Children's Trust and implemented by the Office of Community Services. The others are: • Morning All Stars — providing prevention of early onset drug, alcohol and tobacco use as well as reducing bullying to sixth and seventh graders at Nautilus Middle and Fienberg Fisher K -8 Center. • Success University — providing truancy intervention services utilizing a Care Coordination model to students attending Miami Beach Senior High, Nautilus Middle and Biscayne Elementary.
