SUBJECT: Miami Beach Police Department— Miami Heat Game 5
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to advise you of the Miami Beach Police
Department's response plan to a potential Miami Heat victory in tonight's National Basketball
Association (NBA) Championship game.
As is customary for other major sporting events, such as the World Cup finals,World Series
and Superbowl, the Miami Beach Police Department(MBPD) is prepared to manage large
crowds and impromptu street celebrations that may ensue.
On June 21, 2012, Captain Mark Causey met with Miami Police Department counterparts to
coordinate and address issues that may arise if the Miami Heat wins tonight's NBA
Championship game. At this time, both departments are prepared to meet each agency's
mutual aid requests, if the need arises by having a designated compliment of police officers
prepared to respond. The Miami Police Department has indicated they will have 1 Sergeant
and 20 Police Officers available to assist MBPD if requested. MBPD is prepared to
reciprocate with approximately 30 Police Officers, who will be prepared to handle traffic
management and provide emergency assistance if required.
MBPD is prepared to hold the Afternoon Shift over, and these officers will be responsible for
staffing all 8 sectors citywide. Once the midnight shift goes in service at 10 pm, the entire
shift will be deployed to the Entertainment District. These officers will ensure there is a high,
visible presence, as well as facilitate the flow of traffic. This response will ensure there are
approximately 65 to 70 officers available to manage any crowd control and public safety
issues. In addition, Command Staff will be present to make decisions and provide
supervision as needed.
