Brooks, Interim City Manager cn DATE: September 10, 2012 ` SUBJECT: "Magic City" filming on Washington Avenue The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you about filming of the Miami Beach -set television series "Magic City" that will have impacts on businesses and residents this Thursday, September 13 from 7pm to lam. In order to achieve the look of the 1959 set show, the production will need to close portions of the area to dress and place period extras and cars. The primary closure area is both sides of Washington Avenue from 10 to 11 streets. In addition, for the first portion (7 to 10pm) the production will also close the southbound lane of Washington from 11 to 12 streets and 11 Street between Washington Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. Access to the Police Station and area residents will remain open at all times. From 10pm to about 12am (midnight), the production will close southbound Washington Avenue from 9 to 10 streets. Additional Intermittent Traffic Controls (ITC) of no more than 10 minutes at a time will occur on northbound Washington when filming takes place. Police will maintain the closures, ITC and reroute of north and southbound traffic per the approved Management of Traffic Plan, allowing drivers to use Pennsylvania and Collins as detours. In addition, pre and post production set dressing will occur between 10 and 11 streets on Thursday from 4 to 7pm and on Friday from 1 to 4am using a bucket truck and police escort. The production vehicles will be using the meters along the east side of Drexel Avenue, along 12 and 13 streets. The production has obtained signed consent from all businesses and residents in these directly affected areas and further notified blocks beyond the affected areas. The noise ordinance will be maintained at all times. This is the first filming in Miami Beach of the second season of "Magic City," Starz's series about the challenges of owning one of the most successful hotels in Miami Beach (and the world) in 1959 as seen through the eyes of the owner and his family. The production is thrilled to return to our area and invites the members of the Commission to visit the set while in the City or visit their studio sets they have created in their makeshift stages near the airport.
