The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to invite you to our Miami Beach Parks & Recreation
Department's upcoming October events.
Hispanic Heritage Festival - On October 12 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm, the North Shore Park and Youth
Center will host its 7 annual "Hispanic Heritage Festival ". The event celebrates achievements and
contributions of Latinos from past to present. Children from the City's after school programs in grades K-
12 will present an array of Latin dance performances to music sung by popular Hispanic artists & groups.
In addition to the festivities, notable Miami Beach Hispanics will be honored with the 2012 Hispanic
Heritage Month Award. This year's recipients, as selected by the Hispanic Affairs Committee, are:
• Mark Causey (public safety) • Richard Martinez (education)
• Bryant Del Toro (employee) • Mara Mignardi (social services)
• Samuel Karkassoni (youth) • Bea Pernia (artist)
Youth Duathlon & Fitness Challenge - On October 1 3th, 8:30 am, the Duathlon series will kick off at the
=Flamingo Park Track. The challenge consists of a 1 mile run, 300 yard swim and a 1/2 mile run and is
designed to encourage young athletes to challenge themselves physically and mentally, as well as
promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. The competition is co -ed for ages 17 & under.
Movie in the Park - On October 19 7:00 pm, Normandy Isle Park will be featuring "Sherlock Holmes: A
Game of Shadows" as part of a series of ongoing "Movie in the Park" events held throughout the City and
hosted by Parks and Recreation. The movie is rated PG 13.
Friday Night Movies - Premiering October 26 7:00 pm, the North Shore Park Bandshell will begin their
Friday Night Movies series with the film "The Shadows ". The series will run through May 2013. The movie
is rated PG -13.
Seniors Halloween Party - On October 30 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, the City of Miami Beach, in conjunction
with the Opium Group, will be hosting a "Halloween Party" for senior citizens of'Miami Beach. Seniors will
enjoy an evening of food, fun and entertainment at Club Mansion.
Halloween Happenings - On October 31S 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm, the Scott Rakow Youth Center,
Halloween Happenings is guaranteed to bring an evening of candy and fun. Enjoy carnival rides, carnival
games, arts and crafts and of course treats!
Safe Night of Fright - On October 31S 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, the fright continues as the North Shore Park
Bandshell will host their annual Safe Night of Fright. The event will allow ghouls and goblins of all ages to
enjoy a free night of trick -or- treating, refreshments, photos and entertainment.
