SUBJECT City of North Bay Village International Baccalaureate Primary Year Program
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to update the Mayor and Commission
on the status of the City of North Bay Village International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary
Year. Program (PYP) at Treasure Island Elementary.
On September 27, 2012, the City of North Bay Village Commission voted to fund
ongoing costs for the 2012 -13 school year for Treasure Island Elementary to support the
implementation of their International Baccalaureate Primary Year Program. With a 4 -0
vote, Mayor Connie Leon- Kreps, Vice Mayor Eddie Lim, Commissioner Dr. Richard
Chervony, and Commissioner Stuart Blumberg, approved the estimated $130,000
funding required by Miami -Dade County Public Schools to sustain the IB PYP program
for one additional school year.
Dr. Leslie Rosenfeld, Organizational Development, attended both the August and
September Commission meetings at -the request of City Manager Dennis Kelley and
Mayor Connie Leon - Kreps, to provide information regarding the City of Miami Beach
Education Compact and IB Programs. Dr. Rosenfeld met with the school Parent Teacher
Student Association (PTSA) representatives and community members, to assist them in
gaining a comprehensive understanding of the IB PYP and City of Miami Beach
educational initiatives.
As of September 2012, the City of Miami Beach has funded all implementation costs to
support Treasure Island Elementary Baccalaureate Primary Year Program
as follows:
• $17,500. Application A and B
• $44,368 Professional Development to train all staff at Treasure Island
in Level 1 (Approximately 58 Teachers)
Support from the City of Miami Beach has allowed Treasure Island Elementary to attain
International Baccalaureate Candidate status. The authorization visit, already funded by
the City of Miami Beach, has been scheduled by the school district for November 2012.
As a result of the City's Education Compact established in January 2008, the recent
2012 Community Satisfaction Survey indicated that 91% of residents who have children
in public schools are very satisfied or satisfied with Miami Beach public schools
compared to 54% of residents with children in public schools in 2007. The City of Miami
Beach has made a significant impact throughout the entire county as the Compact
between the City and the School Board is a model of how a city can strengthen the
relationship between schools and community.
