SUBJECT: Free Hazardous Waste Drop-off&America Recycles Day 2012
The purpose of this Letterto Commission is to announce the City's upcoming free hazardous waste
drop-off and the celebration of America Recycles Day. In addition, during the month of November
the City will be launching a multi-media recycling campaign in local outlets.
On Sunday, November 11, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., at the parking lot located on 40th Street
and Chase Avenue, the City will be providing free household hazardous waste drop-off and paper
shredding to Miami Beach residents. Residents can drop off household chemicals and hazardous
waste, including paints, cleaners, motor oil, propane, pool chemicals, batteries, electronics,
fertilizers, and pesticides. For additional details on the types of materials that will be accepted,
please visit www.miamidade.gov/dswm/home chemical disposal.as In addition, a shred vehicle
from Shred Trust, a company that provides business security solutions for disposing and destroying
sensitive material, will be on-site to accept, destroy, and recycle paper documents.
On Tuesday, November 13, the City will be providing information about the City's new recycling
requirements from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Whole Foods Market, 1020 Alton Road. The Public Works
Department Environmental Resources Management Division will be providing information about the
City's new recycling requirements for commercial establishments and multifamily residences.
On Wednesday, November 14,the City will be celebrating America Recycles Day at the City's Food
Truck and Music Fest and at Soundscape Cinema Series.At the Food Truck and Music Fest at the
North Shore Bandshell from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m, the Environmental Division will be joined by
Coca-Cola's Recycling Educational Vehicle (REV). The REV will be stationed to inform the
community about the importance of recycling. The REV incorporates educational elements to
increase public awareness about the value of recycling, including an interactive display and
informative videos.At the Soundscape Cinema Series,the first public service announcements of the
new recycling campaign will be unveiled. Prior to a free showing of"Singing in the Rain" at 8:00
p.m., members of City's Sustainability Committee will be featured in a PSA making their pledge to
recycle.
As part of our partnership with Coca-Cola Coca-Cola provided the City with 10,000 reusable bags
made from recycled plastic. These bags will be distributed to promote the City's new recycling
campaign during educational events throughout the year.
