SUBJECT: Anticipated high tides
The purpose of this LTC is to advise you on the potential localized temporary flooding that might
occur from November 11 through November 18 as a result of extreme high tides.
Beginning Sunday, November 11, the City will be experiencing tides above normal for the period
of one week. As you know, the City of ,Miami Beach is located on a barrier island and is
vulnerable to the impacts of these high tides. Low lying areas that are especially prone to tidal
flooding are Purdy Avenue, between Dade Boulevard and 20 Street, the west side of Palm
Island, Alton Road and West Avenue, particularly at 5 Street, 10 Street and 14 Streets.
Next week's tides (see attachment) come very close to, but not quite as high as last month's
tides. Last month's tides ran over a foot above normal predicted tides. Currently, tides are
running about 0.5 feet above the predicted tides.
Moderate east wind and light showers are forecasted for next week; therefore, it is likely that the
City will experience short term flooding in its low lying areas. City staff will take the necessary
preventive measures to mitigate temporary flooding, including placing sediment control tubes
and special sandbags at catch basin openings in Alton Road intersections at 5 and 10 streets,
installation of pipe in -line air plugs at low lying areas, and cleaning of catch basins as needed.
We will also have police and parking enforcement on standby to assist as needed with traffic
control and continue to monitor weather forecast to adjust our response plans.
