Brooks, Interim City Manager DATE: January 15, 2013 SUBJECT: Miami Beach Police Department — Pedestrian Safety Initiative The purpose of this Letter to the Commission is to update you on the Miami Beach Police Department's (MBPD) Pedestrian Safety Initiative. As you may have noticed, pedestrian safety signs have been installed throughout South Beach (Area 1). In addition, increased enforcement details have been established in Area I (South Pointe Drive to 23r Street), particularly in the South of Fifth neighborhood, West Avenue, Alton Road, 15 Street and Jefferson Avenue, where the incidence of speeding is highest. The increased enforcement at these specific locations comes as a result of citizen complaints and the high volumes of pedestrian traffic. As a result of these enforcement actions, 208 citations were issued, 3 vehicles towed and eight (8) arrests were effectuated for. Bench Warrants and Driving while Driver's License Suspended. The MBPD will continue to install pedestrian safety signs throughout the City, and continue enforcement action to deter speeding in our community.
