LTC # 020-2013 CITY CLEkK'S OF"- 1 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti Herrera-Bower and Members of the Cily Commission FROM: Kathie G. Brooks, Interim City Managers-` i DATE: January 23, 2013 SUBJECT: FDOT STATE ROAD (SR) 112/JULIA TUTTLE CAUSEWAY BIKE PATH/TRAIL PROJECT The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to inform you that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began construction of the State Road (SR) 112/Julia Tuttle Causeway Bike Path/Trail Project on Monday, January 21, 2013. The project is scheduled to be completed in March 2013. The project extends from SR 5/Biscayne Boulevard in the City of Miami to SR 907/Alton Road in the City of Miami Beach. The estimated construction cost of the project is $132,000. The goal of the project is to construct a bicycle path/trail in each direction along the Julia Tuttle Causeway, in order to create a connection for bicycles between the City of Miami and the City of Miami Beach. The proposed bicycle facilities will be added by utilizing the existing shoulders on SR 112/Julia Tuttle Causeway. The proposed connection serves to promote bicycling as an alternative mode of transportation, complement the existing bicycle lanes on the MacArthur Causeway, and provide an alternative route for bicyclists between the cities of Miami Beach and Miami. FDOT has advised that no lane closures are anticipated to occur during the first week of construction. In addition, the City will request that no lane closures occur during the Boat Show scheduled from February 14—18. During other major events, such as Winter Music Conference and spring break, the City will monitor and coordinate with FDOT the suspension of any lane closures if warranted. All lane closures will be coordinated with the City of Miami Beach, and FDOT will notify the City in advance of any anticipated lane closures. Information regarding lane closures will be disseminated to residents on a timely basis. As part of its public information program, FDOT has designated a Public Information Officer(PIO)for the project who will be the point of contact on community issues and be available on a 24/7 basis throughout the duration of the project. The PIO will be responsible for disseminating any updates via e- mail to affected area stakeholders regarding construction activities, lane closures, and traffic impacts. Lastly, FDOT has created a project website and placed information regarding lane closures and project details on the following website: www.fdotmiamidade.com. Enclosed please find a project fact sheet. The fact sheet includes project information, construction schedule, and contact information for the Public Information Officer for the project. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
