The census is a count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons on a single night planned, coordinated, and carried out locally by the Miami -Dade County Homeless Trust. In Miami -Dade County the count is conducted bi- annually, in January and in the summer. The City's Homeless Services Division's Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) conducts the count for the City of Miami Beach. The count consisted of 7 teams comprised of HOT members, volunteers, and police officers. The teams visually count the number of homeless people on the street. Data gathered includes age, race, ethnicity, age, family status (single, couple, family). Team # Team Area Team 1 South Pointe Drive to 9 street, the Islands (Star, Palm, and Hibiscus) and the MacArthur Causeway Team 2 1 oth street to 16 th street Team 3 17 th street to Dade Blvd/23 rd Street and the Venetian Islands Team 4 Lincoln Lane South, Lincoln Road, Lincoln Lane North Team 5 23 Street to 63` d Street Team 6 63 rd Street to 87 th Terrace Team 7 The Beach - Government Cut to 87 th Terrace The January 2013 count resulted in 138 homeless people counted Citywide. This is the lowest count since January 2008. Contrary to popular belief that the City's homeless count is higher in January due to those coming down to Miami Beach to escape winter, the data shows that we actually have more homeless in the City in the summer.
