Brooks, Interim City Manager DATE: March 11, 2013 SUBJECT: Latest News and Upcoming Events This Letter to Commission is provided to update you on activities at our Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department. Unique Starz- On Saturday, March 9, 2013, the City of Miami Beach Hip Hop Team "Unique Starz" (consisting of 10 teenage dancers)came in first place in their division and won the best all-around in all divisions for their outstanding performance in the Florida Cheer and dance competition held at St. Thomas University. Hats off go to the Miami Beach Unique Starz Hip Hop team. COMING UP... Youth Duathlon&Fitness Challenge-On Saturday, March 23, 2013,the City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation is once again challenging runners & swimmers ages 17 and under to compete in the Youth Duathlon and Fitness Challenge. The event will start at the Flamingo Park track (12 St. & Michigan Avenue)at 8:30 a.m.The course is comprised of a one-mile track run,followed by a 300-yard pool swim and finishes with a half-mile track run. Surf Camp-From March-24-29, 2013(Spring Break),the City of Miami Beach Parks&Recreation and the University of Miami-Nbva Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities(UM— NSU CARD)will be hosting its long awaited 6th Annual Spring Break Surf Camp for children with autism spectrum disorders.This free, unique and exciting camp will open its doors to 12 campers, ranging from 8-12 years of age with autism spectrum disorder.The participants werachosen after being screened by UM-NSU CARD and City of Miami Beach Parks & Recreation. The unique curriculum focuses on swimming skills, basic oceanography, meteorology, open water surfing and most importantly the children's abilities. The first day of camp is a meet and greet, at Normandy Isle Pool, 7030 Trouville Esplanade, where campers get to meet the staff and go through the schedule. The educational component of the camp will be held out of South Pointe Park, 1 Washington Avenue, and the actual surfing component will be held at the beach adjacent to the park. Spring Eggstravaganza-On Saturday, March 30,2013,the City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation will kick off the spring season with a day filled with food, fun, music, rides and of course...eggs. The Spring Eggstravaganza will take place at the North Shore Park lawn located at(50172 nd Street)from 10 a.m. — 12:30 p.m. Children 10 years and younger are invited to participate in the annual egg hunt that will take place at 11 a.m. In addition, there will be a fire truck demonstration by the Fire Department. We warmly encourage and welcome your visit at any of these events, and experience first-hand the many events your Parks & Recreation has planned for our Miami Beach residents.
