TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and M bers of th City Commission C -, M FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager aN r te.. .... DATE: April 12, 2013 CD a C) SUBJECT: Earth Day & Arbor Day Celebration c o N The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to extend an invitation to you to enjoy an afternoon of environmental awareness as the City celebrates Earth Day and Arbor Day. The event will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. -4:00 p.m. at Lummus Park (9 Street & Ocean Drive). As part of the celebration, the City has invited individuals and organizations to participate in a Native Flags Eco -Art Project, designed by Xavier Cortada, (Artist -in- Residence, FIU College of Architecture + The Arts). This project gives participants an opportunity to create a flag that depicts an eco- action they pledge to engage in to support the environment. We anticipate more than 300 flags will be completed by youth in our Parks and Recreation programs and others prior to the day of the event. Staff, non - profits, and sponsors will also be available to assist individuals with flag making on the event day. The flags will be made from recycled or reusable materials such as old T- shirts, tree limbs, and poles. At this time, the City's green partners for this celebration include the Coca -Cola Company, Zip Car, GTAG, Florida International University, the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Office, the Environmental Collation of Miami Beach (ECOMB), the Surfrider Foundation and, the Sunflower Society. These organizations will have informational booths and give brief presentations to educate participants about sustainability programs and other environmental issues. Additionally, beginning at 3:00 p.m., the reading of the Earth and Arbor Day Proclamations will occur and a tree planting ceremony to commemorate Arbor Day will take place. At 4:00 p.m., all flag bearers will stake their flags along the shoreline in support of Earth Day and their "green" messages. We welcome your participation in the City's Earth Day & Arbor Day celebration. Should you have additional questions, please contact Kevin Smith at (305) 673 -7730.
