Dear Mayor and Honorable City Commission:
The Transportation and Parking Committee met on April 8, 2013, and held a
discussion with Jeff Cohen from Miami Dade County /Public Works Division.
The Committee discussed the speed humps and 20 mph speed limit on Pine
Tree and La Gorce. Mr. Cohen stated that from an engineering and traffic
planning perspective, the speed humps were a terrible idea. The 20 mph speed
limit was a result of having an overabundance of speed humps; ten (10) on each
street.
Mr. Cohen stated that a better traffic - calming solution would be to turn these
two streets (which are major collectors for Miami Beach) into two -way streets,
and suggested removing the island planters during the conversion. He also
stated that the neighborhood association was in favor of this. The price tag for
this conversion would be around $2 million.
The Committee also agrees that these speed humps and the 20 mph speed limit
are terrible solutions for this major roadway and would like the City to explore
turning these two streets into two -way roads.
