LTC # 203-2013 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Mattie Herrera Bower and M bers of t e City Commission FROM: Jimmy L. Morales,City Manager DATE: June 10, 2013 SUBJECT: Miami-Dade County Emergency B ach Renourishment Project The purpose of this LTC is to provide an update to the Mayor and City Commission on Miami-Dade County's beach renourishment project planned for the vicinity of 54th Street. Miami-Dade County conducted its last truck haul beach renourishment project in the vicinity of 54th Street in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, approximately 30,000 cubic yards (cy) of sand were placed between 53rd Street and 55th Street. In 2009, 9,000 cy were placed in this area. Since then, this area has experienced increased erosion, further accelerated by the storm surge from Hurricane Sandy. On June 17, 2013, Miami-Dade County will begin an emergency truck haul beach renourishment project in the vicinity of 54th Street to provide storm protection and recreational benefits to this highly eroded section of beach. Approximately 10,000 cy of sand will be trucked in from the Ortona quarry in central Florida. Construction is anticipated to last 60 days. During this time, the contractorwill stage sand east of the 53rd Street parking lot and will access the beach from this location, as well. The City will continue to work closely with the County to inform affected parties and ensure that accurate information regarding the project is available.
