2014-28582 Reso RESOLUTION NO. 2014-28582 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING (ON BEHALF OF ONE MIAMI BEACH, INC.) DONATIONS FROM VARIOUS DONORS, TOTALLING $70,000; WITH SUCH DONATIONS TO BE DISTRIBUTED BY THE CITY TO NAUTILUS MIDDLE SCHOOL, A MIAMI DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AND TO BE USED BY NAUTILUS FOR THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF PURCHASING COMPUTERS FOR THE SCHOOL'S CLASSROOOMS AND FOR USE BY THE STUDENTS; AND PROVIDED FURTHER THAT ANY SURPLUS FUNDS (IF ANY) LEFT OVER AFTER THE PURCHASE OF COMPUTERS BE ALLOCATED BY THE SCHOOL TOWARD THE HIRING/RETENTION OF EXISTING SCHOOL AIDES WHEREAS, on January 15, 2014, the City Commission adopted Resolution No. 2014- 28465, authorizing the creation and establishment of a not for profit 5019(c)(3) corporation, to be known as "One Miami Beach, Inc.," and whose purpose would be to provide assistance to worthy and qualified community needs and projects that benefit the health, safety, or welfare of the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, the Articles of Incorporation for One Miami Beach, Inc. were filed with the Florida Department of State on February 11, 2014; and WHEREAS, the City Attorney's Office is currently reviewing the Bylaws for One Miami Beach, Inc., and, additionally, is preparing the Application for Recognition of exemption under 501(c)(3) (the Application); and WHEREAS, the Office of the Mayor received a letter from the Nautilus Middle School PTSA, on behalf of the School, requesting assistance for the purchase of computers for the School, for use by the students; and WHEREAS, the City Commission finds that there is a valid public purpose in assisting Nautilus Middle School in supporting the students and teachers.in the classrooms and, in this regard, keeping up with current technology (or the lack thereof) is one of the greatest obstacles faced by the School in its continuing efforts and ongoing commitment to provide its students with the best possible education; and WHEREAS, the City Commission hereby finds that the donation of monies for the purchase of computers for use by Nautilus Middle School in its classrooms and by its students serves a valid public purpose, since the City has continually pledged its commitment toward improving the quality of education for the City of Miami Beach youths, and in ensuring that City of Miami Beach public schools offer the best possible education to their students; and WHEREAS, through the efforts of One Miami Beach, Inc. the City has been successful in raising a total of $70,000 dollars in donations from private donors, which monies will be distributed to Nautilus Middle School for use by the School in purchasing computers; and WHEREAS, the City further recommends that, in the event that there are any surplus funds for the aforestated donation after the purchase of computers, that any excess funds be applied toward the hiring of school aides at Nautilus Middle School. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA THAT the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept (on behalf of One Miami Beach, Inc.) donations from various donors, totaling $70,000; with such donations to be distributed by the City to Nautilus Middle School, a Miami- Dade County Public School in the City of Miami Beach, Florida, and to be used by Nautilus for the primary purpose of purchasing computers for the school's classrooms and for use by the students; and provided further that any surplus funds (if any) left over after the purchase of computers be allocated by the school toward the hiring/retention of existing school aides.
