2014-28559 Reso RESOLUTION NO. 2014-28559 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE FINANCE AND CITYWIDE PROJECTS COMMITTEE TO PROCEED WITH A BICYCLE SAFETY CAMPAIGN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL BICYCLE ADVOCATE MR. RICHARD CAHLIN INVOLVING THE SALE OF CYCLING CLOTHING TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR BICYCLE EDUCATION PROGRAMS. WHEREAS, this item was requested by Commissioner Weithorn and referred to the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee (FCWPC) at the July 19, 2013 City Commission meeting to discuss a possible partnership between the City of Miami Beach and the Bicycle Committee in effort to promote safety for bicyclists; and WHEREAS, as a result of the number of cyclists currently traveling on the City's streets, sidewalks, and pedestrian pathways, the number of conflicts, violations, and accidents has become a source of concern for the City Commission and residents; and WHEREAS, the Commission directed staff to embark on a bicycle safety campaign with the goal of reducing the number of accidents and conflicts between motor vehicles and bicycles by educating motorists and bicyclists on traffic laws; and WHEREAS, local bicycle advocate Mr. Richard Cahlin approached the City with a potential partnership opportunity involving the sale of cycling clothing to help raise funds for bicycle programs. Mr. Cahlin has previously partnered with the cities of Miami, Coral Gables, and Pinecrest to use the respective city seals or logos for reproduction of cycling clothing to be sold at local bike shops, museum stores, and other outlets; and WHEREAS, the City may allow the City's logo to be used on cycling clothing, in return for proceeds from the sale of the cycling clothing to be donated to the City to be used to fund bike initiatives and help fund a bicycle safety education program in Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, this item was discussed at the February 21, 2014 Finance and Citywide Projects Committee meeting and the committee recommended moving forward with the Bicycle Safety Campaign focusing on the importance of bicycle and driver awareness when sharing the streets of Miami Beach. The Committee also recommended a partnership with local bicycle advocate Mr. Richard Cahlin involving the sale of cycling clothing to help raise funds for bicycle programs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept the recommendation of the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee to proceed with a bicycle safety campaign in partnership with local bicycle advocate involving the sale of cycling clothing to help raise funds for bicycle education programs. Concurrently, local bicycle advocate Mr. Richard Cahlin approached the City and Commissioner Weithorn with a potential partnership opportunity involving the sale of cycling clothing to help raise funds for bicycle programs.
