SUBJECT: South Pointe Park Pier Grand Opening Celebrations
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to inform you of the South Pointe Park Pier
grand opening celebrations. In November 2012, the Office of Capital Improvement
Projects began the South Pointe Park Pier Project which consisted of the demolition of
the existing pier and construction of a new pier that telescopes out in a succession of
honeycomb-patterned platforms extending 450 feet from the entrance for fishing,
recreation and special occasions. This historical landmark pier will now be a new public
attraction for Miami Beach locals and tourists.
The new pier features shaded sitting areas, state of the art fish cleaning stations, lookout
points and an eloquent gate. The inauguration of the renovated pier will also highlight
German artist Tobias Rehberger's playfully designed gateway entrance. The piece,
which he calls `Eloquent South Pointe Pier Gate' features the pier's name in his hallmark
"speech bubble" paired with colorful abstract lines.
Please find below a brief summary of the celebrations:
• Tuesday, August 12, 2014 6pm-8pm Yoga at the Pier- The event will feature
the health and wellness component of the South Pointe Park Pier and invite
locals to come out and enjoy an evening of complimentary yoga. (Open to the
Public)
• Wednesday, August 13, 2014 10am-12 noon Painting at the Pier- The event
will consist of Miami Beach summer camp children painting a canvas which will
have a printed silhouette of the new South Pointe Park Pier. (Not Open to the
Public)
• Thursday, August 14, 2014 10am-12 noon Media Day- The event will consist
of media representatives having exclusive access to all fishing facilities and
amenities prior to the official opening. (Not Open to the Public)
• Friday, August 15, 2014 6pm-8pm Ribbon Cutting Ceremony - The event will
consist of ribbon cutting ceremony and the unveiling of the artistic gateway
entrance which is a Miami Beach Art in Public Places project. Please find
invitation attached. (Open to the Public)
