SUBJECT: South Pointe Park Playground Improvements
The purpose of this LTC is to notify the City Commission that the Parks and Recreation
Department will be temporarily closing the South Pointe Park Playground to perform
improvements.
Last year, the Department received several requests to add more shade coverage from
parents of playground users. The current shade sail system leaves the playground
unshaded for much of the day. Staff conducted research and with the vendor,
developed a plan to utilize some of the existing hardware, and install a two extra poles
and new sails to provide the additional shade coverage. This plan was presented to the
South of Fifth Neighborhood Association and the plans have been approved by the
City's Building Department.
To install the new poles, the playground will remain closed beginning Monday, January
11th and is expected to reopen Friday, January 15th, weather permitting. Once the poles
are in place, final measurements for the sails will be taken and production begins. This
takes approximately 2 weeks, at which time the playground will close again for 1 to 2
days for installation of the sails.
