SUBJECT: Motion made by the LGBT Advisory Committee
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform the Mayor and Commission
of a motion made by the LGBT Advisory Committee on June 14, 2016.
BACKGROUND:
Several months ago, event managers for the Art Basel Fair expressed a desire for the
City to provide Gender Neutral restroom signage in locations where single stall
restrooms would be available. Staff presented signage alternatives to the City's LGBT
committee for input since there are no current specific international design standards for
Gender Neutral restrooms signage. The sign attached as Exhibit A was the selected
sign.
ANALYSIS:
The Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation and Expansion Project will contain a
total of fourteen (14) separate, private restrooms which will be located in areas
throughout the building.
Each of the 14 individual restrooms will be handicap accessible and contain baby
changing stations. The purpose of the separate restrooms is to provide facilities for
disabled people with personal assistants who might be of a different gender, people with
children of a different gender, people who do not want to stand in line for multi-stall
restrooms, people with infants, and gender non-conforming people.
The signage for these restrooms needs to depict the ultimate end user by way of
international symbols, text and braille, as well as maintain an international standard by
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and the US Department of
Transportation. The selected sign meets both of these standards.
COST:
There is no additional cost to the project for the signs as signage was included as part of
the original budget.
MOTION: To accept the selected signage implementation of 14 gender neutral
restrooms in the new Miami Beach Convention Center.
