A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE ADMINISTRATION TO PROVIDE
ASSISTANCE TO THE MAYOR'S AD HOC BLUE RIBBON STEERING COMMITTEE
ON THE CONVENTION CENTER HOTEL, AS NECESSARY, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
LIMITED TO, REQUESTING THAT THE ADMINISTRATION PREPARE, OR IF
NECESSARY, RETAIN CONSULTANTS TO PREPARE, BASIC PLANS/TRAFFIC
OPTIONS FOR VARIOUS SCENARIOS RELATING TO THE LOCATION AND
ORIENTATION OF A CONVENTION CENTER HOTEL IN THE VICINITY OF THE
MIAMI BEACH CONVENTION CENTER.
WHEREAS, on April 13, 2016, the Mayor and City Commission established the
Mayor's Ad Hoc Blue Ribbon Steering Committee on the Convention Center Hotel (the
"Committee"), chaired by Commissioner Arriola and Vice-chaired by Commissioner Rosen-
Gonzalez; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, the Committee has worked collaboratively and has met
on a regular basis to obtain feedback from the community on potential options with respect to a
Convention Center headquarter Hotel development, including options with respect to a
proposed Hotel's location, size, height, and related issues such as traffic mitigation, and the like;
and
WHEREAS, the Committee worked with the FIU Metropolitan Center to undertake a
survey of residents, to better understand the reasons for the outcome of the voter referendum
on March 15, 2016, which failed to garner the 60% voter approval required under the City
Charter for a long-term ground lease for the proposed Hotel development; and
WHEREAS, based on the input provided by the public and the results of the Hotel
survey, which was circulated to the Mayor and City Commission via LTC No. 351-2016, the
consensus recommendation of the Committee was to request that the Planning Department
and/or Transportation Department prepare, or if necessary, engage a consultant to prepare,
basic conceptual plans and traffic options for various scenarios with respect to the location and
orientation of a potential Convention Center Hotel in the vicinity of the Miami Beach Convention
Center, to assist the Committee in obtaining maximum public participation with respect to a
Hotel's development.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that Mayor and City Commission
of the City of Miami Beach, Florida, hereby authorizing the Administration to provide assistance
to the Mayor's Ad Hoc Blue Ribbon Steering Committee on the Convention Center Hotel, as
necessary, including, but not limited to, requesting that the Administration prepare, or if
necessary, retain consultants to prepare, basic plans/traffic options for various scenarios
relating to the location and orientation of a Convention Center Hotel in the vicinity of the Miami
Beach Convention Center.
