SUBJECT: Historic PineTree Drive Australian Pine Tree Scheduled Pruning
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide you with information regarding the
pruning of the Australian Pine Trees in the medians and Right of Way (ROW) along the
Historic Pine Tree Drive corridor. Miami-Dade County owns and operates Pine Tree Drive.
Pine Tree Drive was designated as a historic site by the City of Miami Beach Commission on
June 6, 2001 (Ordinance No. 2001-3310).
On January 8, 2014, the City retained Chuck Lippi, ISA Board Certified Master Arborist to
complete a tree risk assessment. The report evaluated the current conditions of all the
Australian pine trees along PineTree Drive from 30th Street to 46th Street. The report
included risk mitigation recommendations. The Risk Assessment Report concluded all 276
trees along the corridor need structural pruning.
In November 2016, Miami-Dade County Right-of-Way Aesthetic and Assets Management
will begin structural pruning of all the Australian pine trees. Over the duration of the project
the City's Urban Forester will be documenting the pruning process to identify tree decay,the
types of pruning cuts made and any other risk factors for inclusion in future tree risk
management assessments.
Work is anticipated to begin the week of November the 6th and be complete by the beginning
of January 2017. The work will commence with the northern segment. Note that no tree
pruning work will occur on official City holidays or during Art Basel from December 1st
through December 4th. The County shall be providing standard Maintenance of Traffic(MOT)
while the tree pruning is occurring. Occasional total road closures will take place on a block
by block basis during the project. The City will be conducting door to door outreach for all
impacted properties, including distribution of flyers summarizing the pruning project along
with applicable road closure information (Attached).

PINE TREE DRIVE
Miami-Dade County will begin the process of pruning the Australian Pines on
the Pine Tree Drive medians from 30th to 46th street. The projects's anticipated
time frame will be 40 days. This project will commence at the northern section
at 46 street and will work its way south to conclude at 30 street.
Tree pruning activity will require a total closure of all the northbound and
southbound lanes on a block-by-block basis as the project progresses. Miami-
Dade County will reroute traffic around the work area(s) in order to minimize
any delays. While tree pruning work is ongoing within a particular block,
all on street parking will be restricted from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in order to
prevent any potential damage to parked cars from falling tree debris. Please
note that no tree pruning will occur during official City holidays (Thanksgiving,
Christmas, etc.) or during Art Basel from December 1 through December 4.
