SUBJECT: Single Family Home Workshop sum ary.
On October 25, 2016, a workshop regarding single family homes was hosted by Commissioner
John Aleman. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss potential incentives for the retention
of architecturally significant single family homes, as well as new home construction within the
City's single family neighborhoods.
The workshop was well attended by residents, property owners, developers and design
professionals who were provided with an opportunity to express their ideas and recommend
possible incentives for compatible and resilient development within the City's single family home
neighborhoods. The attendees identified architectural style of as the greatest concern with
regard to the character of their neighborhoods and identified cost as the biggest impediment in
retaining existing architecturally significant homes.
Additionally, participants gave recommendations relative to possible initiatives the City could
explore in order to increase the quality and resiliency of development within single family
neighborhoods. These recommendations included the following: '
• Require a recycling plan for homes that are proposed to be demolished
• Create material salvage opportunities for homes that are proposed to be demolished
• Establish :a grant or other similar government financial assistance program in order to
encourage resilient adaptation of existing architectural significant single family homes
• Assist single family homeowners with a cost estimate analysis for elevating existing
homes
• Modify current development regulations for new single family home construction
• Additional public outreach with regard to individual historic designation of single family
homes
• Research development regulations and assistance programs that have been successful
in other cities, such as Coral Gables and Savannah, with regard to compatible single
family home development.
