LTC # 189 -2017 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Philip Levine and Member of the City mmission FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: April 7, 2017 SUBJECT: CITY OF MIAMI BEACH JOINS r XTDOOR, THE PRIVATE SOCIAL NETWORK FOR NEIGHBORHOODS. This Letter to Commission (LTC) is to notify the Mayor and City Commission that the Office of Marketing and Communications has partnered with NextDoor, as a public agency, to improve citywide and neighbor -to- neighbor communications and further promote transparency. This new communications tool will allow us to share instant information with residents about construction projects, sea level rise, traffic and much more. With Nextdoor, the City will also be able to post information, such as important news, services, programs, public events, and emergency notifications to Nextdoor websites within the city. Miami Beach residents can join private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, local services, and even lost pets. This integration will enable the City of Miami Beach to build stronger, safer and more informed communities with the help of residents. Nextdoor has already proven to be a well- adopted tool for Miami Beach residents as 30 Miami Beach neighborhoods have started Nextdoor websites. The City is encouraging more residents to take advantage of Nextdoor, where they can ask questions, get to know one another, and exchange local advice and recommendations. The Miami Beach Police Department also utilizes Nextdoor to communicate with neighborhoods pertaining to police matters. You can access the information by downloading the app on your phone or by visiting www.nextdoor.com on your computer. Nextdoor is free for residents and the City. Each Miami Beach neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents who verify that they live in the neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self- manage their own Nextdoor websites and the City will not be able to access residents' websites, contact information, or content. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by search engines.
