SUBJECT: City Delivers Groceries to Its Ne, diest Residents
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to advise the Mayor and Commission that the City
has resumed its grocery delivery program.
The City's grocery delivery program provides fruits, vegetables, protein and shelf staples for
elder residents facing food insecurity. The monthly delivery packages provide much needed
nutritional support for very low income residents who often sacrifice on food costs in order to
meet their housing expenses.
The food delivery program is intended to serve 50 households. However, since the program was
delayed because of provider hardships, the City served 60 households in April and will continue
to use the savings from a delayed start to serve 60 households through September. Meal
packages weighed almost 40 pounds and included seasonal fruits and vegetables, canned
chicken and tuna, olive oil, pasta, canned goods, breadsticks and more.
The Office of Housing and Community Services registered income -eligible residents from
December through March and completed registration at their homes when disability or infirmity
prevented them from visiting City offices. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds
pay for the majority of the grocery program's costs.
