Morales, City Manager Date: May 2, 2017 Subject: South Pointe Irrigation and Land ape Pr • ject The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide information about the ongoing South Pointe Irrigation and Landscaping Project. The Office of Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) has been upgrading the existing irrigation system and replacing trees, palms, shrubs and groundcover throughout the South of Fifth Street Neighborhood. The Project Limits include Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue between South Pointe Drive and 5th Street, 1st, 2nd and 4th Streets between Washington Avenue and Ocean Drive, and a portion of South Pointe Drive. Damaged trees and palms or those in poor condition will be replaced with the same species. Additional palms will also be installed. Crews are currently removing palms along Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive and will commence their replacement this week. The crews will then move to 1st and 4th Streets between Washington Avenue and Ocean Drive. Landscaping on 2nd Street has been completed. All palms and trees will be tagged prior to their removal. The installation of shrubs and groundcover will follow the tree replacements. Once the palms and trees are planted, irrigation canisters and bonded aggregate will be installed within the tree pits. The work is expected to be completed within the next 60 to 90 days. A Construction Update was issued to the stakeholders on April 5th and will be periodically updated as the work progresses. All remaining landscaping in the south of fifth areas highlighted on the map (see right) is scheduled to be complete in the coming weeks. cope of Work Crews are working to finalize the following tasks: • Planting new ground cover, sod, trees and palms • New palms will be planted in empty tree pits • Select trees and palms in poor condition will be removed and replaced with similar species • As trees are planted in empty tree pits, subsequent bonded agregate will be placed in the tree pits. Schedule The final stage of landscaping south of fifth is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 10, 2017. The project duration is approximately two months. Construction work hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Extended time is subject to City approval and community notification. Please note that this schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions. • Crews will be working on Collins Avenue first, and then move to Ocean Drive; they will be simultaneously working on the cross streets. • Utility locates (spray paint ground markings) have been called for throughout project limits. • Pedestrians may be detoured for safety purposes. • Lane closures are not expected in order to accomplish this task. • Parking will be restricted in two -block sections adjacent to landscaping work zones in order to complete this work safely and efficiently. • Construction vehicles and plant materials will be present throughout the area. • Tree braces are required to remain in place for approximately one year for safety.
