LTC 295-2017 The Town of Hempstead, NY Adopts the MB Free Suncare Dispenser Program for their Pools and BeachesMIAMIBEA H OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. 295-2017 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: June 2, 2017 SUBJECT: THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD NEW YORK ADOPTS THE MIAMI BEACH FREE SUNCARE DISPENSER PROGRAM FOR THEIR POOLS AND BEACHES The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to announce the Miami Beach Free Suncare Dispenser program extension to the Town of Hempstead New York. We are thrilled to announce the Town of Hempstead New York is adopting Miami Beach's Free Suncare Dispenser Program for its own beautiful beaches and pools. On June 1, 2017 Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino announced a partnership with South Nassau Communities Hospital to protect their neighbors from the strong summer sun by stationing 25 free sunscreen dispensers filled with Miami Beach Suncare SPF 30 Triple Action Sea Kelp Sunscreen Lotion at town beaches and pools. In 2015, in honor of Miami Beach's centennial, the City along with Destination Brands and Mount Sinai Medical Center launched the first free sunscreen dispenser program. The dispensers offer free SPF 30 Sea Kelp Sunscreen Lotion throughout the city's public beaches, pools, and parks and garnered national recognition -serving as a model for programs instituted in other cities. As the first in the nation to offer free sunscreen to the public, the MB Suncare Dispenser program received recognition from former Vice President Joe Biden during his White House Cancer Moonshot Summit held in Washington D.C. This national program established a new initiative to accelerate cancer research, making a decade's worth of advances in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care in five years. In May of 2017, the MB Sunscreen Dispenser Program was extended for another five years, thanks to the generous support from the Mount Sinai Medical Center to Destination Brands. Mount Sinai Medical Center will be providing Destination Brands $70,000 in sponsorship to Destination Brands, which covers a portion of costs of the program. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined over the past three decades, listing melanoma as the most lethal form of skin cancer. However, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that most skin cancers are easily preventable. Risk factors to remember are long periods of sun exposure, tanning beds, having fair skin and a history of blistering sunburns. Recommended steps to reduce your risk of contracting skin cancer include using sunscreen, avoiding exposure to the sun's rays during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., wearing broad brimmed hats and UV-protecting sunglasses and covering up with clothing. The City of Miami Beach and Destination Brands, the manufacturer of MB Suncare, welcome the opportunity to be a part of the Town of Hempstead initiative and to continue leading the national movement In skin cancer awareness and prevention through the Free Suncare Dispenser Program.
