LTC 317-2017 2017 South Florida Business Journal Healthiest Employer AwardMIAMI BEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC# 317-2017 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Philip Levine and Members FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager \t-~t:::~~~- DATE: June 13, 2017 SUBJECT: 2017 South Florida Business Journ Healthiest Employer Award We believe that improvements in employee health, and corresponding health coverage costs, can be achieved through wellness plan management, disease management, case management, measuring results, making lifestyle changes, promoting wellness education and promoting healthier decision making. Although the idea to develop a Wellness program for the City began years ago, we finally executed an agreement with Humana in January 2016, to administer a program that is tailored to the needs of our employees. Our wellness program, administered by Go365 (formerly known as Hum ana Vitality) and NRG Corporate Well ness is off to a great start! Although we have limited data with regards to a return-on-investment, and within a self-funded health plan an increase in large claimants can have a big effect, we can certainly say that when compared to other corporate wellness programs, the City has done a phenomenal job in getting employees engaged in lifestyle changes that are beneficial not only to the employee, but to the City as well. The City has a number of planned wellness activities each month where participation is steadily growing. Even with space constraints to hold these activities, we have found ways to keep our popular recurring activities going. We keep it moving! Work friendships and camaraderie is seen throughout the organization. The consciousness of our employees can be seen each day. Below is a highlight of some of the current activities: • Camp large group training for City employees is powered by NRG Fitness (Peter Ware), and takes place two days a week in two locations: City Hall and Fleet/Sanitation Building. NRG runs six 45 minute training sessions each week. NRG also hosts Camp NRG training on the beach on the beach once a month. • Peter also conducts multiple seminars each month on health eating habits, snack choices and tastings, the dangers of sugar, Type 2 diabetes, healthy smoothies, and other healthy lifestyle tips that shift unhealthy behavior. Lunch-n-Learn seminars are hosted at various City locations each month as well. Letter to Commission 2017 Healthiest Employer Award Page 2 • NRG Fitness has energized our workforce and created an extraordinary high level of employee engagement that is yielding happier, dedicated and more productive workforce. We have even heard testimonials from employees participating on how they have been able to discontinue medications for cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. T Letter to Commission 2017 Healthiest Employer Award Page 3 • We have also had cooking demonstrations and guided tours of our local grocery stores by a nutritionist. During the tour, employees learned how to read nutrition labels, select lower fat products, choose the heart healthiest oils, and much, much more. • Another component of our Wellness Program is financial wellbeing, which includes subjects for budgeting and debt management to investing and saving to buy a house. We had a few sessions this year and have more scheduled for the remaining of the year. • On Wednesdays at 5:30p (City Hall), there is an opportunity to increase flexibility and muscle strength, improve respiration, energy and vitality, maintain a balanced metabolism, improve athletic performance and many other benefits at our Yoga session. • Zumba classes provide a large calorie burn through aerobic activity done with interval training in mind. It is both a dance class and a fitness class held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:15pm (City Hall Parking Garage-Rooftop or 61h Floor). Fernando is an awesome high energy instructor that brings a lot of Latin flavor to each session. Whether you know how to dance or not, this class is sure to get you moving and burning calories. Letter to Commission 2017 Healthiest Employer Award Page4 Albeit new, we wanted an opportunity to showcase our wellness program among other South Florida businesses. In March 2017, the City entered into the South Florida Business Journal "Healthiest Employer Award" which allows businesses in South Florida to be recognized for their wellness program successes. Below is some of the data provided in the questionnaire, which we believe contributed to the City being named as one of the 2017 Healthiest Employers in South Florida (presented by Florida Blue). The City was in the category among the top ten large employers in South Florida (500 employees or more), and featured in the June 2nd Edition of the South Florida Business Journal. We were among companies such as American Express, City Furniture, Palm Beach County School Board, and the number one healthiest employer, Humana. These companies have had wellness programs in place for five years or more. We consider it an honor to be named alongside these companies when our program is only a year and a half old. • At the end of year one (December 2016) of our Wellness Program 9.2% of our employees completed a health assessment, and 6.4% of our employees completed biometric screenings. (See Attachment "A" for COMB Go365 Activity Report) • In March 2017, we had 17% of employees that completed health assessments, and 12.8% completed biometric screenings. • In our first Step Challenge we accumulated a total of 19,869,469 steps! On average each participant did 11 ,827 steps, which surpassed the recommended 10,000 steps a day. • Since January 2017, NRG has trained 1,879 City employees • Since January 2017, NRG has hosted monthly seminars for 226 City employees • Since January 2017, NRG averaged 15 City employees per Camp NRG training session Letter to Commission 2017 Healthiest Employer Award Page 5 The City's Wellness Program is progressing and we will continue to build on this platform by soliciting the support of multilevel leadership, engaging employees, partnering with vendors that can provide essential components of our program, and communicating our mission to have a healthy workforce. We believe we have improved the mindset of some and changed the culture of many to pursue a healthier lifestyle by creating a personalized strategy that gives employees control over their health. (See Attachment "B" Engagement Statistics as of April 2017) It is our intention to be named the 2018 Healthiest Employer in South Florida. With the integration of our new medical administrator, Cigna, collaborating with Humana Go365, NRG Fitness, and the City's benefit team, we will work together to achieve our wellness goals and objectives.
