13369 RESOLUTION NO. 13369 WHEREAS, in the list of pioneers whose labor, devotion, inspiration and efforts have transformed South Florida from a waste wilderness to the world' s best known resort area, the name of Henry E. Flagler stand pre- eminent, and WHEREAS, it was the daring pioneer spirit of the said Henry E. Flagler which brought the first railroad into Miami at the turn of the Twentieth Century, and WHEREAS, the growth of Miami and the evolution of Miami Beach was attributable in the main to the construction and operation of said railroad, and WHEREAS, in fitting commemoration of the achievements of this outstanding pioneer, a monument to his memory was erected on an island in Biscayne Bay within the corporate limits of the City of Miami Beach, and WHEREAS, the said island, by erosive action of the tidewaters of Biscayne Bay, has jeopardized and en- dangered said monument, and WHEREAS, the proper preservation of said island and said monument is notably a national responsibility, and WHEREAS, the preservation and enhancement of said monument and said island is fittingly a responsibility of the Federal Government and pre-eminently justifies its acquisition by the Federal Government as a part of its National Monument Program; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Congress of the United States, the President of the United States, and the Department of Interior, a.re hereby memorialized and respectfully requested to take the necessary actions for the acquisition and maintenance of said island and said monument for the benefit of all the people of these United States; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that copies of this resolution be transmitted to the members of Congress respresenting the State of Florida, to the President of the United States, and to the appropriate officials of the Department of Interior.
